In the day and age of self-checkout, WebMD, and "Googling it”, many customers are self-sufficient and don’t like to ask for help finding a product. If they don’t see what they’re looking for, they might just walk out and you just lost a potential sale! Follow our showcase do’s and don’ts to make your shelves functional and looking sharp!

  1. Product placement

    1. DON'T overpack your products. Too much of a good thing can be a mistake. When there are too many products crammed into a showcase, your customers' eyes can’t focus on the individual items. Instead, they just see the showcase as one big jumbled mess. Limit the number of products you display on each shelf, and give each item some breathing room.

    2. DO organize like items together. Sort products by category, brand, and price point. When you pick a consistent way to sort product your customers pick up on that, and know how to shop your store. This allows your customers to narrow down what they’re looking for as they travel through the aisles of your store.

  2. Showcase colors

    1. DON’T use dark colors for your shelving. Dark shelves cause problems on many levels. They show dust, make your space feel smaller, and they make it hard for products to stand out. On the other hand, light colors do the complete opposite. At Quality Wood and Metal Designs, we make sure the interior of our showcases and doors are always light colors. This allows the products to stand out on the shelf.

    2. DO use lights to highlight high-end items. To really make your products “pop”, add under-shelf lighting! Eyes will be drawn to these products, making them fly off of the shelves. Read more about the benefits of under-shelf lighting here.

  3. Shelving design

    1. DON’T mix small and large items on the same shelves. Organize your product by size in order to make your shelves easier to read. Not only does this make better use of your precious shelf space, it also allows your small products their own time to shine instead of being overshadowed by large items.

    2. DO keep your shelves at a consistent height. By keeping your shelves even across multiple sections in the aisle, you are allowing your customers to browse your products without re-adjusting their eyes for a different shelf. This makes comparing similar products much easier.

  4. Creativity

    1. DON’T keep your displays the same all year long. A static display easily gets glossed over. Not only do customers ignore them after a while, but they are also a magnet for tired and dated products.

    2. DO have your products tell a story. Take advantage of the seasons and holidays. When the holidays are over, feature different products or brands to keep your displays moving. Make a goal to change your featured showcases monthly.
